The Steurer winery is located in Jois and is run as a family business with dedication. While Hannes Steurer is responsible for all work related to wine, from vine cultivation to vinification; his wife Emma supports him in administration and sales. Son Michael is also already actively involved and has vinified four of his own wines: a Pet Nat (Grüner Veltliner with Pinot Blanc), a Chardonnay fermented in wood, a Rosé from the Ried Gritschenberg and the new Cabernet Sauvignon Marthal. But he is currently gaining experience at other wineries as well.
The winery owns 14 hectares of vineyards, 75 percent of which are planted with red wine varieties (Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon) and 25 percent with white wine varieties (Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc). In addition, a few hectares of grapes from contract winemakers are also vinified.
In a prime location between the hills of the Leitha Mountains and Lake Neusiedl, the vines reward the winemaker with optimal grape material for powerful red and fruity white wines.
Steurer also trusts the basic philosophy of the winery, which is not to be afraid of modernity, but not to lose sight of tradition in the vinification process. The white wines ferment in electronically controlled cooling tanks and are then stored in stainless steel - this allows the grape fruit to be optimally transported into the bottle. But there are also various experiments in the orange range: here the wines are stored for a year on the fine lees without the addition of sulphur.
For the red wines, the grapes from top sites ferment in wooden fermenters to make them even more elegant. However, a good portion of the reds are aged in French 225-litre and 500-litre barrels, which gives them fine toasted, vanilla and chocolate aromas. It is particularly important to the winemaker that his wines are fun to drink and that the region is recognisable in the wine.
Numerous awards underpin the quality of the wines; three very special successes meant the excellent "3rd Falstaff Winner" 2012, the "AWC Trophy Winner" 2018 and the "3rd Falstaff Varietal Winner" 2018 with the "M1". In addition, the family winery was awarded the title of Winery of the Year 2020 at the Burgenland Wine Awards, and in 2021 the cuvée "Fam Steurer" was chosen as the national winner.
In addition to the winery, the family also owns the "Genusslaube" wine tavern in Jois. Those who want to stay a little longer can enjoy Burgenland in the new "Schlafgut" vis-à-vis the winery, equipped with its own pool and sauna and rated with five suns.
